Personally, I'm with the commenter here who says:
"I've always thought that Zombies were a clean jab at the very nadir of the uncanny valley, giving voice to our deep, biological fear of disease, and of it claiming our loved ones while endangering us, even to the point of making it too dangerous to care for them, or even mourn."
Except that I'd say that while it's about the uncanny valley - it's more about the making of the known/safe into the other/dangerous. And that's why I find 28 days later so effective - it's the people you know and love, only full of rage and hate and out to cause you hurt in any way they can.
