the people that perpetrated this, both in terms of the lies and prosecutions, should be held criminally liable for the suffering and deaths they've caused.

I suspect that some of these senior management figures may well be going down.

Does this mean that people at Fujitsu could have been siphoning off the missing money? That seems more likely than random error because AFAIK there has never been reporting of any of these errors being in favour of the branches.

If the system reports that there should be more money in the till than there actually is, where does that money end up? What's the balancing transaction? They must have recorded a sale of something.

Apparently the "missing" money that the subpostmasters had to pay back was put in a specific fund held for three years and then reported as post office profits.
