If I had had to guess which PM the Anthony Eden jug was, I'd have guessed Harold Macmillan. The John Major jug looks more like James Callaghan. For others I'd have had to give up politics. Theresa May = Diana Wynne Jones? Ramsay Macdonald = G.K. Chesterton? Rishi Sunak = Christopher Lee as Count Dracula??

Date: 2023-07-13 03:54 pm (UTC)Most of our local expenditure comes from income taxes, so the value of our property tax is low and the relative cost of a revaluation high.
We abandonded property taxes altogether in 1989/90. Scotland was a year ahead and proved that the "poll tax" was a disaster, with a widespread boycott, but England&Wales went ahead anyway ... and may even have brought down the Prime Minister, before we went back to property taxes in 1993.

Date: 2023-07-15 07:32 am (UTC)Property prices are somewhat lower than in the UK, possibly as a result of these; I suspect a lot of that is also due to rent controls and general tenants' rights making renting less of a bad option and making landlording somewhat less lucrative than in the UK, so buy-to-let isn't such a huge fad here. [insert here also the "ha ha it's because no-one wants to live in Belgium" jokes]
