Not something an 11 year old should have to have stored in her memory- an soldier's daughter of 11 who became a military historian.

Yeah, not the kind of thing an 11 year old should be exposed to. More the kind of thing an 11 year old should be protected from.

Hmm. A bright interested 11yo who wishes to know should be allowed to see/hear about such things in a supportive environment, perhaps retold in a way that s/he can handle.
Especially if it is significant to someone close to them.

I had a father who was away on service rather a lot so tended to get left to my own devices and my devices included a fascination with the Vietnam war even though I'm English. Being a soldier's child tends to lead you that way.

It shouldn't be a surprise that I ended up being a military historian I suppose, although I've never been quite sure how I ended up with a 17th century specialism.

11 is a reasonable age to start considering such things, I agree. It's also the age that's suggested as a minimum for teaching about the Holocaust. But I'd want to be a lot more careful than I would be with a 13 year old.
