5 - no, Beveridge's law?

I don't know that Princess Mononoke flummoxed the U.S. so much as it flummoxed that particular studio. It was an extremely limited released, only a handful of cities for a single weekend with no promotion, they never gave the theatrical release a chance.

Yeah, as the article says, with the right backing and PR it might have gone a lot further.

Good article on 'Mononoke'. I remember seeing it sub-titled originally at a San Jose [CA] art-house - and loving it. I saw it 3x & then I heard that it would be dubbed and was horrified ... mainly because most English dubbing jobs at that point were -terrible-.

Then I heard that Gaiman would do the script - and had some hope. When the dub released, I saw it twice - and bought the DVD when it came out. When I rewatch it, I flip from sub'd to dub'd depending on mood and love both versions. I still love 'Totoro' more, but 'Mononoke' is my 2nd favorite Miyazaki films & I've tried to collect them all.

Oooh - question for you, as you've switched back and forth - are there any significant wording differences between the sub and dub?

I've found it interesting to have both English sub and dub on at once and notice the differences. (Haven't tried it with this one though.)

Gaiman's dub script is SO good! There are some very short, 1-sentence explanations, once or twice. I'm guessing less than 50-60? words in the whole script that aren't just translations of words or phrases.

In fact, the single most noticeable addition to the script is when Ashitaka is talking with the village elders and is cutting off his top-knot of hair before leaving. In the original, much of this scene is solemn & silent. The the scene is shown - 'camera' behind the eldest - showing all the men with heads down. Gaiman adds about 3 sentences of explanation, explaining why Ashitaka's loss this is so devastating to the village - that he is dead to them now - and it's just perfect.

There are a few extra bits of dialogue from the gals at Irontown, which are a little rough, good-natured banterings & it's mentioned in passing they were happy there since they can choose who they sleep with.

There is remarkably little changed. Just the occasional few words to flesh out why things are happening. And the English voice actors are excellent. I think I love Gillian Anderson's Moro slightly more than the Japanese voice actress, but both groups of voice actors are fantastic.

Ah! Those two drugs are available in the US, and both of them have the potential to have people do a lot of things while asleep, and not remember it afterwards. I'm surprised the article did not mention those potential side effects, given that both drugs have been known to cause sleep-driving.

3) Yeah, it does look pretty ... so did the Jackson movies ... but the dialogue sounds like the sort of fantasy I turned to Tolkien to get away from.
