I spent a chunk of Saturday morning trying to explain the difference between the GRA and the Equality Act to a bunch of hysterical transphobes on Twitter before I eventually gave up and muted them - they would not be convinced that self ID for legal documents wouldn't result in every Tom, Dick and Harry declaring himself a woman and no-one being able to object to them anywhere because they had signed a form. One of them flatly refused to believe that trans women have been using women's spaces for decades without issue and was utterly convinced that medical diagnosis gatekeeping had been keeping the numbers of trans folks down to a tiny number that was suddenly going to explode if it was taken away.

I do try, although it feels increasingly pointless trying to reason with folks online and is mainly so trans folks can see that you're not alone and don't have to deal with all this stuff without any back up from cis folks. It's all too easy to think everyone is transphobic because these idiots are so vocal, it's important to keep reminding ourselves that they are actually a minority.

Especially the myth about cis men claiming to be women so they can assault women in women's toilets -

cis men are *already* assaulting women in women's toilets, and they don't use any pretext of gender, they just look for relatively unpopulated toilets

[there was a case recently where two cis men in Australia assaulted a woman in the women's toilets and I wanted to send it to all the TERFs and say "trans women in women's toilets are not a threat, it's cis men in women's toilets who are a threat!"]

It's completely crackers, one of them was going on like there was some sort of magic sex detector at the entrance to facilities that keeps men out and won't work any more if the GRA is reformed! They appear to be utterly convinced that they are being told they can't object to cis men in women's spaces.

And as I said elsewhere, if you take the logic of their position, my old friend Chris (Christian) who is a 6 foot bearded trans guy and dwarfs me is a 'sister' and should be using the ladies' loos and be welcomed there.
