Regarding the terrible Fatima campaign, it seems like the 'from 2019' debunking is based on rumour, though it's true that the ballet dancer is part of a series: https://twitter.com/marykmac/status/1315723833320579075

Thanks for the partisanship-COVID cases per million graphic link. It's a beautiful visualization.

In unrelated but related news, Edward Tufte has published a new book!

My twitter comment on the dancer campaign still stands - which is that ELQ regs mean that retraining is a very expensive thing. Most places won't hire you to do computing things without a degree (or 20 years' experience now), especially if you're a women, especially especially if you're a woman of colour. So if you've already had a student loan to do a qualification in say, performing arts or English or Media Studies or history, you're going to have to scrape together the cash to do your new undergraduate yourself.

I mean, I suffered from the ELQ regs back in 2007, when I started my second undergrad. I did it through the OU, which had far, far lower fees than other universities before the fees went up to £9000 (they're still cheaper, just not nearly such a massive bargain). If you can manage to retrain to "cyber" for less than £20,000 now, you're doing extraordinarily well.

When they stopped the student nurse bursary, they also stopped funding the Nursing degrees - you now have to get a student loan or self-fund. Which is a problem for the 10-15% of the intake who already had a degree; just the sort of people they wanted for nursing, a bit more life experience and understanding of the responsibilities of the job - not the wet behind the ears scared of bedpans teenagers they like to worry about in newspapers. Median age at intake for Mental Health nursing was 28, I presume after encounters with the field and a desire to make things better.

I went a few years ago to see a museum exhibit of color-restored reproductions of classical sculpture, and wrote about it here. The exhibit's webpage is still online, so you can see pictures.

I continue to think that storage systems are where the current challenges that impact renewable adoption lie. But I also think that there are lots and lots of useful solutions ready to be adapted that will really help renewable generation expand. Shifting solar PV excesses at midday to heating hot water for the following morning is a great example. Both technologies exist, but it's going to take a while for people to combine them.
