Because I have carefully, painstakingly, over my entire life, taught myself to read body language and tone of voice and mostly pass for neurotypical, I read that kind of article and feel crushed because I can't be a Proper Autistic Person because I can do all those things without surgical intervention. It's not EASY, and it takes a lot of spoons, every day, but I can do it therefore I am not authentic.

Date: 2016-04-14 05:13 pm (UTC)That's like someone saying they that if they try really hard they can manage to walk to the shops (but they're exhausted afterwards), and therefore they aren't _really_ disabled like the people who need a wheelchair.
You wouldn't tell Holly she wasn't blind because she still has a little bit of vision, so don't tell yourself that you're neurotypical because you can manage so long as you work really hard at it.
