Regarding the House of Lords: I'd be in favour of a New Zealand style single house with PR and get rid of that whole layer of hierarchy, cost and corruption altogether.

I'm not, NZ is a relatively small country population wise, unicameral chambers can work well when you've not got a huge number of people to represent, the bigger the population the more remote individual legislators are from people, having a revision chamber able to say "actually, this is stupid" to the primary chamber becomes more important.

A 2nd chamber that's distinctly different to the primary chamber (the Australian Senate's not a bad model, same for the Indian Senate, which is similar to the German Bundesrat) and you have people not beholden to the Govt of the day able to really look at legislation properly.

Too many Commons votes are partisan for/against things, we count "rebels" as important because they're rare, etc. Unicameralism's not a good model for large population countries.
