Trying swimming in pyjamas, to get you used to how it is to swim in clothes, in case you fall in.

Isn't that part of a regular swimming training? Or maybe in the UK, swimming training is not as regular as it is in water-logged Netherlands?

It's a regular part of swimming training, once per term. Most of the time they're learning how to swim in swimming costumes.
