Two weeks after seeing the CGI Lilo and Stitch at the cinema I'm watching the original with the kids. And it's so much better. The direction, the writing, the acting are all just much higher quality.

The remake felt much clumsier. And I don't really understand why.

Edit: Just realised that they entirely cut the Ugly Duckling part from the remake. Why would you do that? It's key to Stitch's arc!
And all of the bits where Lilo how to be like Elvis.

In fact, nearly all of the bits where Lilo talked to Stitch and built a relationship with him.

It's a weird question, and I'm not sure how to ask it or if it makes sense in a "simple" kids movie...

Did they "dumbify" it?
I noticed in a lot of more recent video games seeming written by 20 year olds who have no conception of gravitas (see the latest Dragon Age for an egregious example, another is Forspoken), the dialog seems dumbed down/modernized and trying to be your friend instead of the characters being living beings on their own. Like... I guess pandering might be the word I'd really use.

Another way I can think of (and it's weird because again, this IS a kids movie)... How in Voltron Force, a voltron remake, they did the TMNT style "TOTALLY COOL DUDE" and yelling all the time. I doubt that's quite the same as happened here but based on what I see people think "kids" movies are I feel like that would be a key feature in this?

I've never seen either of them, but it just feels like, culturally, the shift I've noticed is just this simplistic narratives, no complexities in characters as characters, and a lot of audience pandering (e.g. emotive "YEAH I'M COOL DUDE" poochie vibes, or trying to "modernize" archaic type characters).

It's a damn shame how things are getting to be like this.

Someone I know said it was colonialist and was very upset about it, but I just could not care that much about a Disney cartoon.

Yes. It sounds like they ruined it in numerous ways.
