Re #shirtgate:

Context is everything. When that guy was interviewed for TV, he represented the entire team that worked with him and the face of 'science'. It's a formal occasion. It was, as it were, like attending a job interview with the public. Most people 'dress up' their appearance and their language for job interviews because it's a demand driven by that context.

Perhaps this guy thinks it's more important to be 'cool', to be 'doing his own thing' and 'fuck it, why should I dress up for the cameras' - without putting any value on the wider perceptions people will draw from his presentation.

Personally, I think it was inappropriate. But I think it's important to understand it was a personal choice made by one guy who either failed to see, failed to understand or failed to care that people would draw wider conclusions about that choice and his choice does not necessarily reflect anything about his team.

Apart from the fact that clearly no-one on "his team" thought to say anything to him about his choice of clothing that day.
