I've, once, managed to buy a CD and being entirely confident that 100% of the money would go to both the label AND the band.

Because I bought it from a merch stall at a gig, and the guy I handed the money to was the band and ran the label.

I've seen the breakdown charts of where the money spent on a CD goes, but it seemed to be focussed on big name major labels that have a lot of promotion. Is the same kind of breakdown true of very small labels?

I have friends who are French and signed to a major label band. What they have told me is that if someone buys their CD they get a dollar, but if someone buys their T-shirt they get $10.

Now, they aren't huge but they are the opening act for Helmut in the EU and are opening for Evanescence on several dates after that so they are not small either.

At the end of the day I'd rather give them ten bucks for a shirt than a dollar for their album.
