Yesterday Julie and I were experimenting with vodka and food flavouring.

I have the food flavouring because it goes awesomely with porridge, and we were curious as to whether we could make lemon, strawberry or orange vodka the simple way.

The answer being that you can, but the flavourings are oil-based, so you have to stir like buggery or you end up with a layer of lemon floating on top of your vodka. Which is not too bad if you're planning on downing it as a shot, but not ideal.

One of the flavouring was "rum", which I'd bought because I was curious, but turned out to be a mix of vanilla (which I already have) and ass.

So today it got poured down the toilet (as there was washing up in the sink).

And that is why our bathroom smells like an alcoholic pirate is sleeping in it.

Can you not just add rum for rum flavouring?

And why would you not?

I am sure the porcelain gods approve of your alcoholic offering. They usually receive such offerings in regurgitated or pre-filtered forms. This must be a nice change of pace. :)

I had some rather nasty vokda a while back (although not quite as bad as that stuff Nathan had at univ) so we put fruit in it, strawberries and raspberries i think, and left it for a month or two.

We ended up with pink vodka that tasted quite nice, and some very pale and pasty looking fruit that tasted rather strong (and not all that nice)

Porridge and food flavouring ey? Sassenach weirdo :-p (the One True Additive for Porridge is SALT as I'm sure you well know... most truly excellent for those who can't eat sugar too :-p)

You can flavour vodka using food extractions, which seems to be a better way to do it - http://www.kamikazecookery.com/blogs/189

Interesting experimental results, which I'll file for reference. Here in the US, the food flavorings I've encountered have all been alcohol-based, with obvious application to flavoring cheap spirits. (Mind you, I'm someone who makes cheap vodka or brandy more palatable by mixing them with chocolate-flavored soy-milk.)

I've made very successful lemon vodka infusions by peeling two lemons with a vegetable grater (lightly so you don't get too much pith - scrape some off if there's too much), slicing this peel into strips and plonking it in the vodka with some sugar.

Although a completely amazing (and seasonal!) alternative is rhubarb vodka - http://www.eattherightstuff.com/blog/2008/11/11/rhubarb-schnapps.html

For a moment there I wondered what my son was up to in your bathroom.

Ah! To be fair, I can think of lots of captain jacks, but none of them exactly have a "sober" vibe :)

Yeah, it's clear Andrew was thinking of Pirates of the Carribean, but most of the other Captain Jacks would have been equally relevant.
