LOL. I usually say "vampire", but in a self-willed way -- that's really similar to lich, just more accessible to non-gamers :) I agree lich is probably a better fit: "step on the way to godhood" is straight out of the metaphoricla lich manual.

For that matter, Jesus may have worn Phylacteries, which is a dead giveaway. (Although a quick google suggests that at the time, probably only priests wore tefillin. Also, I shouldn't joke about it, because Tefillin are fairly serious, so it's a bit impolite to point out that DnD stole the name to refer to the rotting-evil-soul-vessel, or how much the leather straps look like bondage equipment :))
