I agree with Mr. Mitchell; I definitely might start wearing a burqa if it were made illegal.

I think Facebook and Apple are in a death match to see which company can get the worst publicity possible.

Wonder if the burqa banning will mean Top Gear will have to reveal the face of the Stig.

David Mitchell:

Ha ha ha. But 'sic' needed, surely? ;)

I dunno about the burqa ban though. How else are you going to stop women being coerced into wearing it?

Yes, that occurred to me as I was writing the comment. Bit harder to pinpoint though -- not being harder is any reason not to take a better option of course.

But the state already tells us what not to wear.

Exactly. It tells you to wear something.

And for that matter, things that aren't the state tell you what to wear. They're called employers. And things that are run by the state tell kids what to wear.

Although, while I'm very fuzzy on the actual legal situation, even that is fuzzy.

Exactly. I mean, it's possible that there's a sufficient problem, in Western Europe, with people being coerced (personally or by societal expectation) into wearing a burqa that explicitly banning it would help. But no-one ever seems to talk about that: what I hear is not Muslim women calling for a ban, but xenophobes calling for a ban. Which doesn't incline me to expect it to be a good idea.

It's like, I'm no expert, and there's probably a problem, but there doesn't seem to be any evidence that the solution has, you know, anything to do with the problem.

The real worry is why questions that involve some English comprehension and some awareness of social and political issues but no understanding of scientific principles or knowledge of scientific facts appear in a science exam.

Dear old NCT ... never missing an opportunity to grind the point home.
