The real worry is why questions that involve some English comprehension and some awareness of social and political issues but no understanding of scientific principles or knowledge of scientific facts appear in a science exam.

Yes, that occurred to me as I was writing the comment. Bit harder to pinpoint though -- not being harder is any reason not to take a better option of course.

Also, I just flat-out disapprove of telling people what to wear. The state has no business telling me, you, or anyone else whether they can wear a burqua. If this means that some people wear clothes I disapprove of, then that's part of living in a tolerant society. God knows I've worn enough offensive things in my time :->

And for that matter, things that aren't the state tell you what to wear. They're called employers. And things that are run by the state tell kids what to wear.

Kids are a special case - and even then many schools have no dress policy - and employers are free agents. Some tell you what to wear, some don't. Individuals and groups are free to make their own choices about what's acceptable for them.

Exactly. I mean, it's possible that there's a sufficient problem, in Western Europe, with people being coerced (personally or by societal expectation) into wearing a burqa that explicitly banning it would help. But no-one ever seems to talk about that: what I hear is not Muslim women calling for a ban, but xenophobes calling for a ban. Which doesn't incline me to expect it to be a good idea.

It's like, I'm no expert, and there's probably a problem, but there doesn't seem to be any evidence that the solution has, you know, anything to do with the problem.
