When the Soviet Union invaded Afghanistan, the American response was to (covertly) sponsor and train local militias/freedom fighters. Arguably it went well, since the Soviet Union left, and collapsed. Arguably it went badly, since it's some of those same people they're now fighting themselves.
Luckily they've got a plan... http://www.independent.co.uk/news/world/asia/petraeuss-first-act-is-to-establish-militias-to-fight-the-taliban-2027711.html
It's like that Future Shock where the scientist keeps creating more and more super supermen :-)

Date: 2010-07-16 02:54 pm (UTC)Saw it on Film4 a couple of months back and, for what initially seemed to be a fairly unremarkable Spanish-language attempt at sci-fi, it's remarkably well put together. Acting's not fantastic, but the plot's a nice take on the time-travel theme. Worth an hour or two of your time and is, at least as far as I can recall, the nearest a time-travel story's come to being paradox-free.
