And the large swathes of wall you can't see. There's something about repetitive tasks that induces an almost meditative state. Not that that makes it any more fun, or I'd be finishing it off rather than writing posts on my phone..

YES, Yes, do it BEFORE you move in. Wish i had. REALLY wish.

I HATE DIY! I never get the meditative state, I have always suffered from chronic inability to colour between the lines (in any and all senses or applications).

Repetitive actions drive me crazy. I can hold it together for about 20 mins then it all goes to sh*t. I often joke about my "Anti-OCD". Many years of archery (the whole *point* of which is to do exactly the same thing over and over and over) did not in any way help me.

Which is to say, I envy you immensely. Any hints???

*sigh* I am going home very shortly to touch up my yesterdays wall/ceiling job in the bedroom and paint all the woodwork.

My mind is so _totally_ not attached to the task. It's off and away and thinking about other things. Because frankly painting large rectangular areas requires less brainpower than breathing. So my mind can wander off onto interesting technical problems, gaming stuff, or anything ele that takes my fancy.

Hmm, well then you are *much* better at the task than I am.

For me, it takes constant attention to not hit the celings/corners (cos rollers are round and corners are right angle), make sure I am covering evenly (bit not excessively) etc, etc. (Even with woodwork and other immovable obstacles like sockets masked off or removed entirely). But maybe the pain is my own fault cos I think large brushed 'borders' look cr@p.

Even gloss-painting skirtings/door surrounds like I did last night, though much much better, *still* demands a fair bit of attention to do an acceptable job (though the amount of hair+fluff that made its way in (despite prep) was horribly depressing)

Easy - rolling doesn't go within three inches of the ceiling - that bit gets done with a brush. But you don't have to worry about the quality particularly, because once you're that high up you can just slap it on and tiny inconsistencies won't be visible from floor level. Stick up some masking tape and then just use a decent sized brush.

Two coats of undercoat means I don't have to worry about how even the first coat is, the second coat will cover up any problems the first one had.

gah, 3" is too much. *i* can see it/know it's there. And I'd still hit the ceiling if I wasn't concentrating.

oh yeah 2nd coat rocks. always looks sh*t after one. Well except if you are really good. Which some people are. And with no masking and no mess.

I feel this pressure to be able to do it like that. Go on, point stare and laugh at the perfectionist :-)

That looks like the same crappy gas heater I have in my front room!

The walls were orange, with a white band above it, and a red strip at the top. The Orange and white are both being replaced with something lighter (as the room doesn't get vast amounts of light), the red is staying.

And the gas heater is being ripped out tomorrow morning at 11...

DIY should never be undertaken without provision of vast quantities of tea and choccie biccies... Several customers returned to tell me the soundness of this advice :)
