Date: 2026-05-10 04:12 am (UTC)I participated in Alarums & Excursions during the 80s (and maybe longer? don't remember now), and have a couple crates full of them in the attic. Lee did a great job with it. It was "indie press, compiled" and it was novel for its time. While I enjoyed reading about new ideas, rules systems, scenarios, and so on, it was even stronger for its community-building. You'd publish your 'zine's main content and then you'd have replies to the previous issue. Some of those conversations went on for months, and sometimes it was just "RAEBNC" ("read and enjoyed but no comment") -- but even those RAEBNCs told you that someone out there read what you wrote, and that was encouragement to continue.
