Livejournal has now got its own IM server, running the Jabber protocol.

You can access it via Trillian or GAIM. I'm using Psi. Your username is your LJ username@livejournal.com and your password is your LJ password. All your mutual friends are automatically added to your friends list.

It's still in testing, so expect intermittent disconnections. Hopefully it'll get more reliable as time goes on...

I know very little about IMs these days. I take it it's not interoperable with Gchat?

Entirely interoperable - they both use Jabber, which passes messages between servers, like email. Add andrewducker@livejournal.com to your GChat contacts (or let me know your GChat username) and we can give it a go.

Actually, I tried www.livejournal.com, im.livejournal.com and chat.livejournal.com, then I gave up and went to bed ... where was this announced, btw ? I didn't see anything in news about it.
Or should I be looking somewhere like lj_nifty ?

With Trillian it has to be the Pro version.

GAIM does it in the ordinary version though.

Or you can download a Jabber-specific client (Psi took me about 10 seconds to set up).
