Well, two hours later, having got _somewhere_ despite never having played around with either GreaseMonkey or JavaScript before, I've hit a brick wall.  If anyone here knows much about either or both and fancies taking a look at this I'd appreciate it.

Might the problem be that the javascript code you want to alter is in a comment (as is all js code)? IE, is greasemonkey code supposed to be able to alter the page's javascript code or just the HTML?

Also, I didn't know about greasemonkey, and it may be exactly the answer to a problem I've been wrestling with for a while now! (Namely, how to automatically track where data comes from as a user copies it off of random web pages.)
