I thought I got it - "it knows whose livejournal is calling it, and creates the image dynamically to suit", I thought. But now it seems to be random.

In which case it almost certainly checks the referer headings to see where it's being accessed from...

It does indeed... 50% of chance of picking the person it thinks you are from the referrer :-P

I didn't realise the genius of it until recently. There should be a version that always picks the person from the referrer :-) (for that IP or with a cookie or something).
