I remember a time, not very long ago, when CGI was darned impressive and was getting close to looking real.  Obviously you could still tell it was CGI, but it was darned pretty.

Some day, I thought, we'll be able to produce graphics that look real.

I didn't notice it happening, but it has.  I _cannot tell_ that the pictures here are fake.  I simply cannot.

I dunno - it looks like they've used a "real" lettuce leaf as a texture map. Which is sort of cheating...

About half of the pics on that page look fake to me (the yellow rose being an excellent example, it might be a plastic rose, but it obviously isn't a real one and it's doubtful as a plastic rose. OTOH, half of the pics (including all of the cars and the above head of lettuce) look exceptionally real. I'm massively impressed.

The pepper is pretty good too, as is the cookpot. Some of the rest look a bit too pristine to me. But that lettuce rocks.

Wow. That is amazing. The Yoda one looks a bit off, though [of course it does; what would a 'real' Yoda look like?], and the true test of CGI is motion, not static images. Still, though. Wow.

That's the first time I recall wanting to fuck a lettuce. And typically it isn't even real. Pfft.
