Since I got a Tivo I've pretty much got out of the habit of channel-surfing. It's actually decreased my TV-watching significantly, as I choose what to watch and watch that, rather than looking about for what takes my fancy at the time. On the one hand that means I watch less TV, leaving more time for other things (hurrah for LJ!), but on the other it means that I don't always pick up on new cool TV that I might have bumped into by accident. Not that I ever bumped into that much - I got into most good TV late (Babylon 5 season 2, Buffy Season 3 and West Wing last year for instance).

To be more precise, since we also have TiVo, my answer should really be:

turn it on, watch part of the program I want to watch, turn it off, wander away and do something else, come back, turn it on, watch a bit more of the program I want to watch, turn it off, wander away and do something else, come back, turn it on, watch the rest of the program I want to watch, turn it off

I'm a rather non-linear tv watcher, because I also tend to watch things more than once, skip past the boring parts, turn something on just to watch the final 5 minutes, etc.

But I don't channel surf.

The only equivalent I now have to channel surfing is TiVo surfing. I watch something, and then go to the TiVo menu to see what else has been taped. I don't generally catch random stuff anymore, but Shannon and I tape a lot of stuff we don't get around to watching (episodes of "South Park" and "Nightline" are a good example ... there are always 3 or 4 of each on the TiVo, but we only watch them when we're in the mood).

I do channel hop, but that's basically because I watch very little scheduled telly. It's something to do while I eat, most often.

The set's in the basement, currently hooked up to a DVD player and nothing else, so we watch DVDs. It's kinda nice. Removing the whole televised universe from our consciousness turned out to be very relaxing.

Eventually our fifteen-year-old Sony set will break down, and then we will be in the shit for real, because the set sits in a monster wall unit which houses all of our hundreds of CDs. A larger, modern television won't fit in it, so when the little Sony goes kaput, we'll either stop watching television entirely, or remodel the entire basement.

But you have me to channel surf for you and tell you about Green Wing :-)

But surely with a regular TV, you could just watch what you want to watch?

They're really not very complicated...

Shows are generally on at fairly set times. and the kind of shows that you seem to watch a lot of, even more so.

As for running your life for them, as you put it... get a video. you don't seem to watch that much TV, so it's not like there'll be conflicts of what you can and can't record. Or just wait for the DVDs to come out and watch it as and when, without needing a TV.

Though, to be honest, I'm not usually the one turning on the TV. It's usually Galoot turns it on, channel surfs 'til he finds the program he wanted to watch, watch that with occasional surfing during ads, then he channel surfs some more after the program until he gets bored of the TV.
