It just amused me.

But you could think of it as the idea that one could have the same feelings that religious people do, but interpret them in a way that doesn't involve any gods.

May I refer you to the Douglas Adams idea of an artificial God as a system of understanding theology without resorting to belief? It's in "Salmon of Doubt" somwheres.
