Remorse

Chronic remorse, as all the moralists are agreed, is a most undesirable sentiment. If you have behaved badly, repent, make what amends you can and address yourself to the task of behaving better next time. On no account brood over your wrongdoing. Rolling in the muck is not the best way of getting clean.

Nope - I bumped into that because it comes at the start of the introduction to BNW, where Huxley says (paraphrasing) "All writers despair of past works of theirs and want to rewrite them to remove their glaring errors. But they should avoid that temptation and produce new works instead."

Said quote having been posted because of the new changes Mr Lucas has made in the re-release of his Holy Trilogy.
