Attention all San Francisco Residents!

(Trying again, after previous posting failure)

Lilian and I are looking for a place to stay, our previous arrangement having fallen through.

If you can recommend a decent place to stay somewhere in the area we'd greatly appreciate it. We're fairly price conscious (especially considering how hideously expensive I'm sure the centre is), but if someone can offer some advice on reasonably quality, reasonably priced double rooms, that'd be _great_.

You'd be welcome to crash at our place in Berkeley; we have a spare bedroom and a futon. Takes about half an hour to get from there to San Francisco on public transportation. I would have to check with David to be sure, but you're welcome as far as I'm concerned.

If you'd rather be in the city, check out the youth hostel -- they do have private rooms available sometime. Look on American Youth Hostelling International's site for the details. Or look into chain motels in places like Daly City or San Bruno (a little south of the city) or even Oakland or Alameda if you don't mind being across the bay. Getting back and forth is easy. Pretty much anything within San Francisco is going to be hideously expensive, unless you want to try your luck with some of the sketchy cheap hotels in the Mission District. I haven't stayed in one but I've heard some interesting stories.

Well, as the Lilian involved, hi and thanks??! You're a maths prof? I'm a law prof at Edinburgh. You don't know <lj user="steer" by any chance? I guess maths profs are ubiquitous on LJ.. Whereabouts in Berkeley do you stay? I'm currently on 59th in Oakland...

Heh, no, I'm a programmer and erstwhile computer science grad student at Berkeley (I just finished my master's there; I was meaning to go on for a Ph.D, but things didn't work out. If you want the detailed story of how that came to be, you can read it in my LJ now that I've added you back ;-)

I live on Oregon and Telegraph -- so pretty close by to you. I didn't realize you were already living around here, so if the backup plan here is for Andrew to stay with you, staying with me wouldn't do y'all much good... But, if you're getting kicked out next week or what-not, the offer stands :-)

I'm not exactly getting kicked out but my landlady has me on sufferance already (she's a colleagues maiden aunt) and drew the line at hairly boyfriend's :-(, hence, panic and empty wallets..

No I don't :) I live in LA :)

Actually, I'm looking for somewhere cheap to stay in SF for next weekend and even the fleapit travelodge I normally use is over $130 a night at this time of year :( I'm actually thinking of staying out in San Jose or somewhere and hiring a car.

You can generally get hotels a lot cheaper if you stay at the airport, but I don't know what the transportation is like from there to the center - the buses in SF as a whole are pretty good so it might be worth trying that!!

Yeh I looked up the cheap travelbooker sites and it was ALL airport hotels - which I must say I hate as I spend way to much of my life at airports as it is..

Don't know how expensive it is these days, but I can thoroughly recommend this place and the fabulous people who run it. I really was incredibly well looked after there.

I've stayed at the Hotel California (seriously) in Palo Alto, which is a CalTrain ride away from San Franscisco. The prices were very reasonable, there's free wireless access, and breakfast is a voucher for coffee and pastries at the bakery downstairs.

Kind of a musty smell, though.

CalTrain doesn't run on weekends right now! Don't stay any further south than Millbrae -- there's no reasonable public transportation down there, so it'll be impossible for you to spend as much time in SF as you probably want unless you rent a car (and I don't recommend that either, since parking in San Francisco is impossible).
