From a discussion on rec.arts.comics.misc, where the different between Akira the film (2 hours long) and Akira the comic (about 20,000 pages long) is discussed:

The movie is decent, but basically takes the first quarter of the series,
tosses in some stuff from the midpoint, and then sort of waffles the ending
to dovetail with the end of the comic.

The most accurate thing I can imagine is THE BIBLEKIRA:

A pretty good depiction of Genesis, right up to Moses leadin' the troops out
of Egypt. Flash-forward to this dude named Jesus waving his hands for a
couple of minutes, then the universe blows up and we all go to heaven or
hell in a five-second sorting frenzy.

The version of Akira thats just come out on DVD is *awesome* its got a brand new dub and the film hangs together so much better now. Its the best version available, even better than the two different subtitled versions. Even though Tetsuo sounds a lot like Fry from Futurama.

Watching it was like seeing it again for the first time. It explains things so much better, things like the Colonels coup and Tetsuos relationship to Akira suddenly are snapped into sharp focus. Its ace.

Not as good as the comic obviously. In the film Kaneda comes across as a bit of a tool, but his naive irresponsibility works a lot better when theres more background and character development going on.
