I do like that you have a tag called "rocks". Have you ever clicked on it to see all the stories about rocks in one place?

I hadn't. But I have now, and was delighted to revisit a couple of old ones!

HES is a quintessential example of public sector obstructionism, and "health and safety gone mad", not just in this case. pathological risk avoidance rather than risk management. and that's coming from someone pathologically avoidant.

It does sound to me that throwing a chunk of money at mitigation plans might help. Needs a rich, high profile donor or three? Gotta be a few with enough interest, surely?

V for Vendetta

I have a deep gut reaction of "Why?" The movie adaptation of V wasn't perfect, but it wasn't too far off -- they messed up the underlying political message (which was deeply unfortunate, since that message was the point of the book), but they got a surprising amount right. I'd be pleasantly surprised if the TV adaptation does as well.

And the comparison with Watchmen is instructive. The Watchmen TV show was absolutely brilliant -- better than the original graphic novel, IMO, and vastly better than its movie adaptation -- precisely because it wasn't an adaptation, but instead a very smart and loving sequel, using some of the same characters decades later, but telling its own story. (And along the way, doing a great job of tying up the most conspicuous loose end from the original.)

I'm always in favour of new adaptations. I'd like to see faithful ones using new approaches that weren't possible, unfaithful ones that play with the setting, story, etc to tell interesting tales, and everything people can think of.

Fundamentally I'd like everything to be treated like a cross between fairy stories and Shakespeare - inspiration for people to use in producing new works.
