The kids are having great fun with the blackboard. Sophia's art and spelling has come along very nicely. Gideon is repeatedly drawing random squiggles and then asking us what they are. Because he doesn't know.

Drawing random squiggles and wanting you to explain them feels so super important.

My son's drawings fell into lines around that time because those were the only things that he felt we understood. It was frustrating to him that we did not understand his other stuff, but it was also a lot of fun to tell him that the squiggle was something terribly complex, like an elephant drinking water from a pond and explaining to him why. He would get skeptical of our explanations and laugh at us.

Gideon reminds me of Isaac Asimov's story of learning to write. He learned m n and u first, and wrote a long series of them in a row, figuring that's how you made words. It's when he got an older kid to read aloud what he'd written that he discovered that the letters have to come in a certain order.
