2: I like the idea. It makes Thufir Hawat a more capable being without having to really change anything presented in 'Dune'. The problem with mentats is that they are supposed to be inhumanly aware & able to link data points.

It's very difficult to write a character more intelligent that the author, but with this interpretation, Hawat can be seen as still cunningly on his game & not doddering off into an embarrassing series of mistakes.
