I was delighted to discover that similar interest matching was working again (if you're a paid member).

Fantastic, I thought. I quick click there will find me loads of people like me.

Dammit, my interests aren't specific enough. The people like me aren't like me! Or maybe my interests don't actually represent me.

I'm gonna play around with my interests and see who I can find.

Or maybe people like you (and you) are too devoutly interested in the things you are interested in; hence not being interested in enough/numerous diverse things.

Or you (being them & you) have not taken the time to really fill your interest box.

I know I haven't.

the whole "machine operated" thing would probably be the problem.

Your interests aren't supposed to define you. How could they? I might have the same splash of gaming/movie/geek interests as a hundred people on LJ, but I don't feel like a clone. My approach to those interests defines me.

Why would you want to define your interests better? Is this step one in a similar-interests-page master plan?

See the way I have a dozen hot chicks who post regularly on my LJ? =) Learn from the master.

Visit LJs that interest you. Lurk for weeks. Like people. Join communities too.

Interesting people will not flock to you. =)

Your interests just ain't gonna do it. If you have 'industrial' and a bunch of 12 year olds like industrial, you might not have the meeting of minds you actually want.

Then start a community, jeez. :)

A community of what interests you. If the existing discssion groups aren't doing it for you, maybe they're not working for like-minded people.

Look at [livejournal.com profile] socksarefun In three weeks, it's up to over a hundred members, with a dozen posts a day about socks. Socks.

So start a discussion group, with a charterbased on your interests. Find people. Go on, get on with it. It's Tuesday, there's not much going on.

You should join more flavorsome communities. =)

Ah! I could hug you! I just found out an old friend of mine has an LJ (no, it never occurs to me to ask them about such things). Joy, joy!

OTOH, she was #88 on the list, and none of my other friends/online acquaintances are on there.

I think you're right about the interests, though. I should probably tweak mine to better represent myself. O_O;;
