Many years ago I was in a corporate 5-aside soccer tournament ahead of the World Cup. My company got allocated Costa Rica and I have a t-shirt from the day with Costa Rica on it, one of my most loved minor sentimental things because Costa Rica is fab.

It does seem like a bit of a risk, abolishing your army. But goes to show what we could achieve if we didn't need one!

Costa Rica is quite a mountainous country with lots of rainforest. If you don't ever want to invade your neighbours or take part in any expeditionary missions and you think you can rely on your population fight an eternal guerilla war then you probably don't need an army for anything that an ad hoc militia can't do.
