That owl was amazing. And after seeing the second thing here, I am afraid that men are going to get eating disorders or spend more time at the gym than they do at work.

1. Some of those owls, definitely!

2. I'm just going to focus on weight management. I don't need the added expense of trying for "ripped" status.

3. [staff profile] denise makes the point clearly!

Babies do that too. I used to read two things at the same time so when K sat on one of them I could silently switch to the one on the other side. And I remember being defeated at her granny's by both K and the cat trying to sit on whichever piece of paper I was looking at at any moment. It's the looking. They want to be the centre of attention. I want to have the newspaper projected onto the ceiling.

The difference is that the male movie physiques now cannot be achieved by most people without either steroids or maybe great genetics and many years of dedicated diet and training. Maybe.

Steroid use is incredibly prevalent among male gym users, is responsible for most of the physiques that are seen in the most popular social media accounts. EVERY pro-level bodybuilder since the 60s has used them (and other substances jointly known as PEDs = Performance Enhancing Drugs, e.g. insulin, growth hormone, thyroid hormones, diuretics etc.). EVERY one. There's just no way to be competitive otherwise (except at the smaller, "Natural Bodybuilding" competitions. The fact that this term even exists tells you much). Most non-gym-trainers don't know this. Most serious trainers take it for granted. This percolates down to the young teenagers just starting training, who now take more PEDs, in higher doses and earlier in their training than ever before - with serious physical as well as mental health consequences.

But of course so many many many lie about PED use, or lie by omission, adding to the mental health issues for the ordinary guy who does not know these guys are all on drugs.

Hollywood has exacerbated this trend, I have no doubt of that. But all media shares the responsibility.
