So if folk want to get married somewhere where equality really has a meaning, they can always pop along to my lot- the Quakers.

Since when did the C of E go back to the 'marriage is for life' nonsense?

Well, forever unless you count its actual founder.

Whilst I understand that Quaker marriages are of great value to those who are of that tradition, if one holds to a sacramental theology, they're no more able to fulfil that sacramental vocation than a civil marriage.

The Church has always held to the doctrine that marriage is for life. The willingness to marry divorcees with living former spouses is based on an acknowledgement that we are imperfect rather than a denial of that doctrine.

If you carve giant holes in your doctrine like that, it isn't really much of a doctrine, is it? More of an aspiration.

I can accept that it's an aspiration rather than a doctrine, and that it's one that matters to many.

But they're not setting it as an aspiration. They're setting it as a doctrine. If they'd said "We prefer this, but we accept on an equal basis those who are not," they'd come across as a prejudiced institution that was willing to set aside its prejudice. Instead, they're willing to set aside their doctrine for some people but not other people. That's what's offensive.

Already noticed the dissonance on this, thank you.

Good, but your comments emphatically did not give the impression that you had.

To be honest I can't disagree, and I don't understand why we are willing to remarry divorcees, but unlike same sex marriage it's not something I feel strongly enough about to have made the effort to understand the reasoning.

If the Bishops had recommended permitting same sex marriage at this stage then it would have been voted down in Synod, and I don't think it's a good idea to get rid of democracy when it delivers results I don't approve of.

Permitting blessings of same sex partnerships is actually a big deal, and I think it's very likely that in the same way that Civil Partnerships paved the way for Civil Marriage, these services will pave the way for sacramental marriage.

Where I come from, at least in theory there's a difference between the rights of a democracy, and the right to deny other people their rights. The former is OK, the latter isn't. We don't always live up to this distinction, but it's an aspiration.

It's a good distinction and one which I thoroughly uphold, but sacraments are gifts, not rights.

I've never found him funny. My impression of his humor, which is supported by the linked article, is that he breaks my basic rule: he punches down, not up.

The elephant in the room, with that statistic about the top 1% taking so much of the growth, is that the economy is contracting for almost everyone else.

This isn't about 'trickle down' or 'a rising tide lifts all boats': it's economic warfare and everyone else is losing, in absolute material losses, not just relative terms.
