My question is whether married men get paid more because they're more effective workers because of the support they get from their wives, or do they just seem more respectable?

Or something else?

From research linked to in one of the replies, it seems that men get married when they have increasing income, and divorce when they have decreasing income.

Something else could be the causality going the other way - high earners being considered more attractive partners?

I'm curious as to whether the effect holds for men with husbands vs single queer men.

1. I am not entirely surprised by this news, although the root cause question still seems up for debate.

2. Good luck to the Baltic nations with this!

3. I'm sure that attitude is becoming more widespread. Putin and company are happy to do nothing to change their thinking. Their permanent removal from office and a full withdrawal from Ukraine will start to help with that...but when?

4. Organized white-supremacist bigotry - racism - is indeed working at taking all the fun out of all the things. To Hell with that.

Did you see this video buried in the thread of replies? OMG. Is that some kind of thermite incendiary attack spread across the city? It's beautiful but horrifying.

Lovely essay on racism and Tolkein - thank you.

Pity it is necessary.

1. My understanding is that, at least in some social class, in the nineteenth century a man's wages doubled upon marriage. To fill out the picture, the employer determined whether the marriage could go ahead and married women did not work.

I wonder if part of 1. is that remnants of this social order have remained in the system.

I think this is a US study, so may not be that relevant to the UK, and based on 2016 figures so hopefully already outdated.
