I thought that was an American thing. I once read a piece attempting to explain Americans to the British, which included the shocked revelation that Americans eat ice cream in the winter. (We do, too.) "Ice cream is the American national dish," it concluded.

One of my college roommates had a tradition of going to eat ice cream when it first snowed in New England. It was a fun tradition.
