I will be interested to see if the UEFA intervention causes any deliberate and pointed push back from the players.

There's a bit on interesting contrast with the tennis here.

For the tennis players the 4 Majors represent their job. The prize money and the sponsorship and advertising income they derive indirectly from playing in those tournaments is, I am guessing, the bulk of their income.

For the very top tier of footballers, your Ronaldos and what not, appering in the Euros might be closer to a labour of love. The starting eleven for any of the clubs playing in the Champions League will be getting most of their money from club salary and endorsements linked to their fame as a club player (I guess).

And again different for the more run-of-the-mill players who will get a boost to their fame from being in the Euros.

Do the Euros need Ronaldo more than he needs them? I think the Euros would like to not find out.

Probably not favourably but there's a difference between case 1 - Ronaldo "disrespecting" the sponsors because they sell soda to kids, UEFA telling him to be nice to the sponsors or get banned from the EURO and telling UEFA to get stuffed and case 2 - Ronaldo says he won't take any more COVID tests and UEFA telling him he can't play.

I can see fans being supportive of Ronaldo in case 1.

And I think in case 1 Ronaldo could plausibly say he's not too good for the Euros but he is too good to be bullied by a bunch of beer and soda companies.

I think they are fining the national football associations?

Aye, and I think it's slightly more removed if it's the national football association - who aren't paying the player the bulk of his salary.

1. I'm finding myself tearing up a little here, reading this. Wondering whom I know and love/like/respect - not all of them relatives - that might be similarly rescued from obscurity this way, unknown to me.

2. That's going to be a grand scale project, isn't it?

3. Good.

2. For a preview, there's two hours of studio video clips here, though you'll understand why I quit watching at 8 minutes in.

3. So the Lib Dems won a by-election? Looks like the curse of the coalition may finally have faded into the past. In which case, look for upcoming Tory debacles along the lines of the ones during the Major ministry: it could hardly be worse.

The Lib Dems won this by-election because the Tories are pushing ahead with HS2 which runs through the constituency in question. The voters face a major disruption in their lives and a possible reduction in property values which cannot be countenanced hence their (temporary) voting shift to the Tories In Exile aka Lib Dems. Next election you can expect it go back to the Tories with few regrets.
