It's nice to see someone who isn't me citing Dale Spender.

I wonder whether the results would be any different now.

I'd love to know.

I'd also like to see how different people react to other minorities taking up time.

And as a baseline, how much time men feel other men have to take up to feel like they're dominating the conversation.

(i.e. if I'm chatting to my co-worker Dave, and he talks 15% of the time, do I feel like he actually had 50%? I assume not, but it'd be good to check.)

All stupendous questions.

You know, I think a lot of the men I know definitely underrate how long/proportionately they themselves talk, which would produce much the same effect as overrating how much other men talk, and produce the accelerating and crescendoing reiteration characteristic of Certain Male Conversations.

Yeah, I definitely lose track of time while I'm talking.

There are definitely some things which are gendered (see many of these https://blogs.cardiff.ac.uk/rsrc/2019/03/08/i-got-told-what-to-call-this-poem-by-my-male-colleague/) - but there are also lots of things that men do to each other all of the time. (Some of which I wish they didn't, to be fair)

Yeah, I think that the gender oppression and the inter-male jockeying are both forms of Hierarchy Framing.

I wondered why Estonia voted for the wolf as their national animal, and then I read that the other choices were the beaver, badger, fox, hedgehog and roe deer. At which point you have to say "oh, the wolf wasn't taken?" and grab it.

Consider also the classic rant about what US state birds should be.

I wonder if there's an actual interesting story about how so many states ended up with the same bird.
