Right, I'd thought that sounded super dodgy. I just don't know if they'll get away with it or not.

I've no idea what's going to happen. If you take privacy seriously, that basically rules out facebook's entire business model. Will they brazen their way through? Will they serve a cut-down version in the EU? Will they find enough loopholes to keep doing what they're doing? Will the EU be able to stand up to them? Or will they suffer a series of fines that they can afford to just accept? I hope they get dealt with! But I don't know.

Ideally they'd start providing a service and letting people pay for it, but I don't expect we'll be that lucky :(

Yeah, the resulting legal actions should be entertaining to watch from a distance.

I'm already enjoying the flurry of pre-GDPR emails from companies I keep trying to unsubscribe from (and/or thought I had years ago) telling me plaintively that if I don't opt-in they won't be able to keep sending me stuff I don't want. Result.

I seriously recommend The Secret Barrister's book. I think everyone in the country should read it. I knew about the low pay of criminal barristers for years, but I didn't realise just how appallingly run and underfunded the entire criminal justice system is, and that it really only functions at all because so many are willing to do emotionally and intellectually draining work with very long hours for less than minimum wage.

I warn you though that it *will* give you the rage.

Re Baring-Gould - I had to leave this comment on the writer's Twitter feed:

How on earth did you manage to write "His most lasting works — The Vicar of Morwenstow and Legends of the Patriarchs and Prophets" when this is the guy who wrote the lyrics to ONWARD CHRISTIAN SOLDIERS?! (and the best-known translation of "The Angel Gabriel from heaven came").

(Neither was even mentioned in the article)
