So the ECJ have decided that foreign countiers can marry people but not divorce them, which I assume means non-zero people now have entirely unclear marital status...

Deciding that people who thought they were divorced aren't is ... incomprehensible to me. But then the entire system is barely comprehensible anyway, why should the law be interested in making people remain in relationships they want to leave, and how does that promote my human rights.

As I understand it sharia law provides clear rules on the division of marital assets...

Not that unusual. Shaw or Wells or Russell or someone got married then divorced in Russia to show how civilised and reasonable their laws on it were, to find later that they were still regarded as married in the US.

This British case from 2014 also concerns a Russian wedding and divorce, although the divorce wasn't recognised in the UK for a different reason.

I fear that too many parents will take "Don't give up!" to mean "Force that child to sit at the table until they eat that food or hell freezes over, whichever comes first," even though that's not what the researchers mean. Heck, too many parents do that already.

*nods* My parents did that: it only led me to eat unhealthy food for a long while as soon as I was living on my own, until I discovered that I did like healthy food, just not the one I was forced to eat as a child. I still hate the things I hated as a kid because, to me, they taste disgusting.

What I've found is that the sheer horribleness of the taste of those foods has faded somewhat over the year. I still don't like them, but now I could force them down if I had to. The irony is that now that I'm not a child, I no longer have to eat anything I don't want to. (Why have I tried these foods again, then? Politeness, as a guest in someone's house.)
