I like the pragmatism of running the self-driving trucks on the highway and swapping to people for the technically and regulatory difficult urban part.

'Patriot' meaning what? It's a great excuse for any violent movement which trades on a fantasy of victimhood. The Polish right-wing has somehow successfully merged Catholicism with paranoid white racist nationalism, whipping up fear of an imaginary Muslim takeover by Syrian refugees. Can you believe it? Poles waving thinly-disguised Nazi flags and protesting against refugees? The same country that was savaged by Nazi mass murderers and has been sending refugee exiles all over the world for decades? If it wasn't so so serious it would be almost funny.

I'm not trying to defend nationalism. I find it interesting that people are becoming more nationalistic internationally. I no longer care to tell people it's wrong. I want to know why people are becoming more nationalistic.

CO2 rise

I read a couple of journalistic attempts to explain the "first CO2 rise in four years" announcement but they failed. I presume other attempts in other places failed the same way as journalists do like to, ahem, "borrow" from their colleagues.

What the headlines were trying to say was that the RATE of CO2 rise had increased again. CO2 levels in the atmosphere were continuing to rise at a steady rate over the past four years, breaking the 400ppm barrier (as measured at Mauna Loa, one of the longest time-base CO2 measurement stations operating) a little while ago. Not really surprising since humans have been burning ever more natural gas and pretending that somehow it's "green" because it isn't quite as CO2-emitting as coal.
