Oh ghod. I don't think they spent a lot of time talking to victims about that one, did they?

The UK does spend a lot on childcare, but I think that high figure may be ignoring child tax credits, which can cover up to 70% of the cost (maximum £210 per week) because those are paid to the family and then used to pay for childcare, rather than it being covered at source as it is in many other countries.

Not a mistake so much as a technicality - as they're paid to the family they could conceivably count as income. Admittedly, even with the child tax credits, the amount we were spending on childcare last year came close to 50% of our combined income (affordable thanks to help from grandparents, a lot easier now that Robin is at school), so it might be included even with the high figure.

After nine days of iPhone X use, the gestures that have replaced the home button are better than the home button. It would, after all, be quite surprising if the most intuitive interface was also the best one for someone who’s been using the device for more than 30 minutes. Apple has always had a bit of a problem with optimising usability for the casual browser picking up the device in a store rather than for the device owner, and this is a step in the right direction, even if it was forced on them.
