What makes you think it's a love story?

Good point.

In some ways it comes across as one (you couple have problems, things fall apart, but at the end they're rejoined in rapturuous lovemaking).

Or it's about the way that people can obsess about perfection, and how fetishes start.

Or possibly something else I can't think of when I've been awake for 3 minutes (yaaaawn).

But I like the characterisation of it as an off-kilter love story (or maybe obsession-story) best, I think. It gives people preconceptions to be disrupted.
