I was always very resistant to the idea of counselling when I was younger. For no particular reason - the idea just scared me, nobody I knew was talking about it, and the way it was portrayed in the media was generally as a source of comedy rather than something which could actually help people.

It took an ex basically pushing me into it for me to finally go and see someone, and it's something I am remarkably grateful for, as it helped me unpick a bunch of misconceptions and bad habits I'd tied myself up in.

I'm not unusual in this. I've just been reading about a study which found that people take, on average, 10.5 years from the start of their problems to seek help in fixing them. That's years of unnecessary misery.

If you're not happy, for a prolonged period of time, and you can't seem to fix the issues yourself, then please do speak to someone. It might take a couple of tries to find a decent counsellor (I was lucky to get someone I clicked with on my first try), but it's worth it in the long run.

I needed specialist counselling very badly indeed and went for it as young as possible- I also found a good'un first off which helped so much.

*laughs bitterly*

More than 7 tries and counting... and still haven't found someone even *barely adequate* yet.
