Date: 2013-09-30 03:52 pm (UTC)I was raised to believe that 'one should not mark books'. The innate preciousness of a book outweighed the possibilities of being able to highlight passages, even in books of utility where it might prove very useful to draw one's eye to the relevant text at short notice. It was a violation of value. Only bookmarks were acceptable.
University library books initially filled me with horror: ad hoc underlinings, paragraphs bracketed, margins be-noted. But I grew to understand and appreciate the markings and marginalia.
Even then, it is only recently, as I started growing my small library of ebooks, that I started electronically highlighting.
There is a little thrill in being the first person to highlight some resonating passage or sentence in some new text, and then finding a sort of validation when you later return and find others have highlighted the same.
