Because while that wedding proposal was simply amazing, I really, really hope that she had already basically said yes, because otherwise that amount of pressure in front of family and friends is just unfair.

My spouse and I just sort of ending up thinking we might as well get married, then we set a date. Then a friend of his escorted him to a jewelry store to buy a ring which we gave to me when he dropped me off at work.

That was 25 years ago, so you don't need over the top to make it last.

I think maybe this earlier dancing proposal to the same song may have produced even more horrifying pressure:

Presumably/ideally, most proposers already know what the answer will be, and the actual question/answer is a formality. :)

A formality deliberately intended to garner 15 minutes of interenet fame these days, I suspect, in some cases.

Only for the very creative ones. (Or internet notoriety, for those who inadvisably pop the question in a very public setting without knowing the answer in advance, like on the Jumbotron at a ballgame.)

In this instance (based on a number of comments by the actual participants posted elsewhere), yes was a formality.

I too queried the wisdom of such an approach (especially because of the undue pressure if she wasn't inclined to say yes in the first place). It could have gone horribly wrong.

Also, it appears that they are both associated with theatre; which explains the abilities of participants involved.

A few years ago I found myself watching This Is Your Life. That week's guest was Bill Oddie, and when Michael Aspel accosted him with the famous red book, he shook his head, said "no, sorry, I won't do it" and walked away. I guess he was talked round eventually because the programme didn't end right then, and actually he ended up being a pretty good sport about it, but I think I'd probably have much the same reaction if it'd been me.

I don't like these type of things. Maybe that makes me a meanie but I don't care.
