Sell people the vouchers, then be all, oh, sorry, we've gone bust now.

Can that work or help in any way? I mean if you still have any money you've not gone bust and have to honour them. If you have gone bust then you've gone bust so what was the point?

I don't get the claim you're making here. What do you think they're trying to do?

It happened with another retailer who went bust several years ago... I forget their name. It will come to me. They did a hugely good offer on vouchers just before Christmas, it was like, £10 buys you a £20 voucher. And they went bust a few days after Christmas, so everybody who had bought the vouchers had essentially lost their money.

And it was rather cynical I felt, because the company surely knew they were on the verge of going bust, but chose to sell loads of vouchers anyway.

Gosh. Who was it. Oh, Zavvi I think, when their high street store business collapsed.

Fair enough -- I guess it must be the business equivalent of what American football fans call a "Hail Mary"? The move that indicates "We're doomed anyway so we might as well try this."
