PotC:DMC was mostly awful, but the swordfight inside the waterwheel was brilliant.

that waterwheel was by far my least favourite scene, and the main reason it took so long to watch the 3rd.

I don't know why anyone would pick anything other than "Pirates."

Like, you really think John Depp can do better than Belladonna and Jesse Jane tripping the clit fantastic?

To be fair, I've seen woefully few of those films, but I do adore the 1st POTC. The 2nd and 3rd ones were entertaining enough tat but 'actually good' is pushing it a bit far. There were moments of goodness but they could really have done with a better script and much tighter plotting. Much as I love watching Johnny Depp, he's made lots of better films than those. I will probably watch the 4th one when it's on telly and no-one expects me to pay to see it though :)

Whereas my SEIWEIC is At Worlds End; sure it had some weaknesses, but all the backstabbing, all the different, contradictory aims the 'heroes' were trying to achive, and a few of its awesome scenes ("Do you think he plans it all out, or just makes it up as he goes along?"), means it comes top for me.

I caught the 4th in 3d. Couldn't see a bloody thing - the film was super-mirky and I missed at least half the action scenes.

You've not included 'The Crimson Pirate' in your list, and it is the best pirate movie.

My favourite pirate movie is The Crimson Pirate http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0044517/ with Burt Lancaster, the title of which I assume was the inspiration for The Crimson Permanent Assurance.

I picked the Crimson Permanent Assurance because a) it has the best song ever about being an accountant and b) it is a salutory reminder that there is a very thin line between Mafia Don and CEO and that some of the same people who used to become pirates now become executives*

Not all executives are pirate fodder.

Yup, that's why I picked it too.

Really the first PotC is the only one I'd describe as good, but I enjoyed the others as well so I give them points anyway.

Have you heard about the new Treasure Island with Eddie Izzard as LJS?

Came here with another write in vote for The Crimson Pirate. I've seen it when I was like 12 (35 now) and couldn't for the life of me remember the title. Until a friend of mine confirmed that the movie did exist and was called the Crimson Pirate. I don't remember much from way back, but this movie I do.

In other news, PotC 1 was ok, but not good or a piece of shit, and I haven't seen any of the others so I can't vote on question 2. And, probably more shockingly, I haven't seen The Princess Bride either, so no opinion on that one either.

i'm not sure i can tell any of the PotC films apart. I just know each had both fun and boring bits, but I don't remember regretting watching them or any shouting at the screen.

Your list of pirate movies is inadequate; at an exhibition at the Museum of London Docklands on Captain Kidd, they were showing a ten minute film of clips from pirate films. At a rough estimate, they had clips of about four times as many films as you have listed here. Wikipedia's list is scary.

For the record, I like The Sea Hawk.

I've only seen the first PotC film and it was literally one of the worst films that I've ever seen, so didn't watch the rest.

If your friends aren't a bunch of children of the 80s types, you might well get more people among your social group having seen the XXX Pirates film rather than the Princess bloody Bride.

That said, the book On Stranger Tides is pretty good.

Also, everyone forgot Cutthroat Island, having looked at the wikipedia list.

And with good reason.

"The abject disaster of Cutthroat Island is also credited with significantly reducing the bankability and Hollywood production of pirate-themed films, which only recovered with the production of Disney's Pirates of the Caribbean: The Curse of the Black Pearl in 2003.[8]"

I am now seized by a desire to pop in my ol' VHS copy of Captain Blood, one of the better swashbuckler flicks ever made. This desire is inconvenient given that I'm at work and a minimum of a half-hour's travel away even if I was willing to risk getting fired for indulging it.

-- Steve was surprised to find it rather smarter than a lot of the pirate films that came after it.
